When complacency sets in

I am a content person, I have a good life, a great life in fact. Lately though I have been feeling those twinges that come about every so often, you know, the ones that niggle at you when you’ve been playing it safe for too long? You quite quickly find yourself on the guinea pig wheel (hamster wheel sounds too American for this true blue Aussie), going through the motions, eat, sleep, work repeat. Of course I am aware that I’m incredibly #blessed and am very grateful for the life I live, including the mundane, nitty gritty stuff.

For me though, at certain times in my life, contentedness can mask complacency, and frankly, I don’t want to want live a life like that. Complacency to me looks and feels very beige (sorry beige lovers!), and there is certainly no vibrancy and growth in that. Contentedness and testing ones self for the advancement of personal growth are not mutually exclusive, in fact, they can be besties for the resties.

Life is either a daring adventure or nothing at all. - Helen Keller

If you’ve read my first blog post, you’ll know that the general theme of that was a personal push to be a better human, for myself, for the greater good of mankind, the planet and all its inhabitants. What exercises could I set for myself to up the feel good vibes? (I am still working my way through these by the way, stay tuned). These exercises are most definitely part of my personal growth, they are however, on the slightly safer side, more the warm and fuzzy stuff.

What I’m getting at in this blog post (or trying to at least) is double daring myself to get a little uncomfortable, get a little wriggly in my seat. Step outside my comfort zone, the safe space, do some things that could potentially give me a little nervous diarrhea but also a whole lotta fist pumping satisfaction.

Have I always been aware of this niggle when it arises? When I reflect back on the past 20 odd years of adulthood, yeah I guess I have, but more so now my kids are older and I have the head space to focus in on myself a little more. (My family have told me I am one determined woman on more than one occasion). I’ve done a few things over the years to satiate the beige beast within, run long distances, started my own business from scratch with no clue what I was doing, left the security of one job to face unemployment, to then dive head first into a new career, only to realise it was just all wrong Heck, I can now add starting this blog to that list too!

That time I thought it was a good idea to run a 10km fun run, then back it up with a 5km 10 minutes later.

As queen Oprah likes to put it ‘what I know for sure is', that these sweaty palmed, suddenly need to fart challenges look different for each of us. For some it might be flying somewhere for the first time, others may want to nail public speaking or learn a difficult piece on the piano...and then perform it in front of others! Whatever it looks like for each of us, it is often as exciting as it is scary, and becomes an integral part of our personal evolution. And I rekon that’s got to be a good thing. You?

So you might ask, Kara what have you got up your sleeve? You’ve talked the talk, now it’s time to walk the walk. Well, if you’ve read this far, understand what I’m getting at and don’t mind the odd fart and poo joke I may just tell you...in another blog post.

Thanks for stopping by. Peace out homies.

x Kara.
